Fish

Paul insisted that one night we were here we must get fish at Bortell’s, which is a small place that sells fish, and for an extra buck and a half, will deep fry it for you.

So off Paul and I go to get our fish for Saturday night’s dinner. We arrive at Bortell’s and discover the line isn’t too long, only about 10 people ahead of us. But we are waiting outside of the shop. We know this is the last weekend they are going to be open so we anticipate that they will be low, or even out of some varieties of fish. But it isn’t until the line moves forward enough so we can get into the shop that we learn just how low they were. There was only one kind of fish left and only a few pounds of that!

Those of us in line started to joke that we didn’t want to be the one who got the last of the fish (We were in denial that we would be the first to not get any fish). There were now at least another 10 people in the line behind us. Paul and I decided to change our order from 1.5 pounds of fish to only 1 and supplement it with more fries. We believe those in front of us did the same thing, all trying to stretch out the remaining fish for those who were standing behind us in line.

The man behind us did get the last pound of fish. Fortunately for the rest of the people in the line, someone ordered 30 pounds of Perch and never picked it up. Those behind the counter made a quick decision to sell it to those people who were there, rather than sit on it hoping that the person who had ordered it would finally show up.

This was my first time having fish from Bortell’s, but it won’t be my last.
